CAREER UPDATE BLOG – 2011: 01
Greetings friends, acquaintances, family, and the like. I am Axis and allies war at sea sending out a career update blog, and I will be sure to do this at least once a month. Most of my blogs have career updates in them, but don’t always focus on them. These particular blogs will be more updates about varying projects and things happening… like “What’s the hap with Cody’s career” type-blogs.
Through it all, however, I hope these blogs are entertaining, joyful, and an adventure, to come to Hollywood & Beyond and read upon my life through its open book format. So much has happened in the past 19 months since moving to Los Angeles and I hope you stay on board through my blog site and watch what may happen in the next 19 months. Bring a friend, too! They are always welcome.
The New Year has started of greatly. I got back from Kansas just a little over two weeks ago and already so much has happened. I have some very specific goals for these first six months of my career. Until April, I will be spending a lot of my time meeting key contacts to promote myself as much as I can for the completion and building up to the release date of Almighty Thor. (I obviously will be actively auditioning, as well)
Some good things are already in motion for the New Year. February 1st, I am doing a photoshoot for a nice spread in a large domestic fitness publication. It will be brand new photos, never seen, as well as an interview with me. I will be featured as a public figure. As silly as that sounds, the thing I mentioned was that I did not want to be branded as a bodybuilder. In many of these online articles that I have researched, and been sent, feature me as a “bodybuilder turned actor,” which is not true. As flattering as that may be, I have never been a bodybuilder. I was a dual-sport collegiate athlete before venturing forth towards an acting career. I have never competed in contests or shows for my physicality, never went to a big show or convention, never have I tried gaining covers to fitness magazines, nor am I the face of a supplement company or product. I have always been an athlete, and only elite athletes develop a physique such as mine through hard work and dedication. So I happen to possess an incredible body, which is a side benefit to the extreme interest I have playing sports, as well as an active life.
Long story made short, they are extremely interested in doing a feature story on me as a public figure/actor and talking about my upcoming project. The editor being a huge Thor fan, it wasn’t a hard sell, which I loved.
I am doing a lot of this work on my own, trying to find different media outlets, science fiction websites and magazines, comic book sites and magazines, as well as fitness publications, as me and Almighty Thor cover those three areas. I also hear there is a large European market for American Sci-Fi films. Since I’ve lived here, I’ve met many amazing people, and I am very happy to have had a friend who knew the editor of this particular magazine.
Some people feel it is too soon to have a publicist in my career, but I feel the exact opposite. However, a well qualified publicist costs around $3,000/mo. It is an expense I am in no shape to contribute towards. However, through certain contacts, I am trying to find something that makes sense that can work on my image and cause, and mutually benefit in some capacity in this early stage. Certainly when I do become a paying client, it would be in their best interest. However, I am still working and have a few working ideas.
Recently I have made some changes in my team. I am, how should I say it, restructuring for the future. You can only go so far as your team, and in fact, don’t think agencies, managers, publicists, attorneys, or the like get enough credit in this industry. Some of these people are the hardest working people you’ll ever meet. I am proud of many members of my team.
However, the manager I was with wasn’t feeling right. There were certain red flags from the beginning, but having never worked with a manager before; however I allowed it to develop to understand a working relationship with one. This manager was good on many levels, and in fact, someone I’d recommend, but there were certain elements that he and I disagreed on. And today I pulled out of our relationship. He attempted for me to sign a long-lasting contract, but I was displeased with certain key pointers upon our relationship to where I did not feel comfortable signing a long-term contract. The past few months he and I had been working together under a good-faith/verbal contract. He was uninterested in signing anything short term. In the end he didn’t want to continue without a signed contract. Then later he did, to which I agreed under certain terms, and then again, today he tried changing the terms. So today I severed that relationship and wished him the best of luck. Where one door closes, another opens. In all honesty, he’s a great guy; we just had varying differences in many ways.
Right now, I am taking these months and time in build up to the release of Almighty Thor AND to find key members to my team. My agency, as I have mentioned before, hasn’t even had their doors open for a year, and they are new and a small boutique agency, who I greatly enjoy. My agent who runs the theatrical department has been a beacon of support ever since signing with her. A great thing is they recently added on a new addition to their team, and I was introduced to Annie Carradine (David Carradine’s wife, who unfortunately passed). David I watched growing up on the television show KUNG-FU. Many of you may know him as Bill in KILL BILL. So I was intrigued in meeting Annie upfront. She was pleasant, and am very happy to have her on my team working as my so-called double agent. She is a valuable asset.
In the search of a new team member, I have made contact with a few personal managers that have been highly recommended to me through certain entertainment contacts, and in the ensuing weeks am getting meetings set up to meet with each of them. I have two that I am very intrigued to meet, as they have come with high recommendations as I shared. My whole idea is to meet 5-8 to get a very good feel of how managers differ. I feel the personal manager is the biggest key to unlocking the potential in a career, besides the actor. In all honesty, it is such a joint venture.
Recently I was offered the opportunity to head to NYC to audition for a Broadway Comedy. I was contacted by a reliable source in regards to the production. From there, the co-writer contacted my agency after seeing some P.R. information on Almighty Thor. It was a huge production, filled with great promises. However, the person who got this information to me could not vouch for anyone in New York. So my team (minus my manager a.k.a my three agents over at HoleShot) worked tirelessly to check with the union and already-hired on cast members to the legitimacy of the production. I even had the so-called Tony-award winning director email me probably the most unprofessional email, or should I say rant, I have ever read in regards to the insensibility of my agent.
One of the reasons I felt my relationship with my manager wasn’t right is he made no attempt, himself, to protect his client (me). However, a very prestigious director, and man I greatly admire, contacted me after seeking his professional advice – a man who has made films that I guarantee you have all seen. He shared his input. He had time to call out of his busy schedule, and that made me very uneasy with signing anything with my manager. Things weren’t adding up at all with the production, and in the end, my team and I decided to not follow through with the Broadway production. If it ends up getting put up, I’ll buy a ticket. The bottom line is there were too many red flags and I felt very odd about my manager’s non-attempt in heading the investigation.
But that is the thing with this business… the misdirection. If this happened to me 19 months ago, I might be on a plane to NYC and auditioning for God-knows-who. That is why I am very happy to have a team working behind the curtains to make my career a reality, and I thank all of those people immensely. I am glad that I am in such a great position to always be protected.
Recently I turned down an audition for a role in a low-budget feature film. It was a role of a high school kid, and it was only a few lines of dialogue. I ended up turning the audition down. Some feel that at this stage I am not in a position to turn down any roles or not meet with casting directors. Although I do agree to a certain degree, I feel differently. Maybe six months down the road when I don’t book a gig that I am pleased to read for, then I might get my wake-up call that I am not exactly where I thought I was with my career.
The truth is I remember when I first moved to Los Angeles and one of my agents in Vegas called me. She told me that Kathy Griffith’s My Life on The D-List was dying to have me carry Kathy down the ballroom in The Venetian with gold trunks and gold sandals, and no shirt or anything else. She said it would be huge exposure. At about this time, I had auditioned for the Marvel’s Thor film as Thor and just moved to L.A. to take my acting career to the next level. I didn’t want to be another ‘model in motion,’ taking on these acting gigs that weren’t acting. They were me standing or picking up celebrities. For goodness sake, I carried Sheryl Underwood off stage of Laffapalooza! and carried Mariah Carey downstairs in one of her music videos until the part was cut out. The point, it was just me doing the same thing over and over again. I told my agent I would do it. 15 minutes later I called her and told her, “I’m sorry, but I can’t do this. I just can’t. I know you’ll hate me for it, but if I don’t say no to this, I’m going to continue booking this kind of work. I’m only interested in serious acting work, and this isn’t it.” Needless to say she’s never called me back for another project again. And I moved on.
That was a big moment for me. When I turned down that road, there was a shift in myself that knew I was ready to pursue bigger avenues. Same thing with the role I turned down this week. By doing so, I basically shared with my team the roles that I am interested in going in on. They now see how I see myself, and naturally others will come to see you as such. And if they didn’t, then you move on and find others who believe in your vision of yourself. I am constantly evolving and developing, and this is another big moment for me. Where I have said that I am ready to seek on more challenging roles. I am not above many roles, believe me, but a low-budget feature two-lined character is NOT going to work for me. If it was a big-budgeted studio feature, then yes, I’d highly consider reading for it.
I know my charisma and energy, my wit and likability, my extreme work ethic, my intellect, and no hangs up (drugs/driking/women), and biggest thing of all: MY IMAGINATION – that I have everything I need to continue this drive forward. I don’t expect a little to happen this year; I expect a life-changing year. And it will happen. God, I promise you.
That is Losartan 50mg not ego sharing that statement. That is not make-believe sharing that statement. That is understanding that all this is evolving into what it is meant to be; my expectations. It is me not focusing just based upon my senses, but our ability to create life. And it will continue, and I don’t fight it. I just enjoy each step; I feel like a little kid explaining my excitement in my blogs and on my facebook page every day that I share good news. I’m still that Kansas kid watching my life change around me and go, “Wow.” Everything is always so vibrantly colorful, I think because I make it that way.
The best news of all (for me personally) is I landed the DVD box cover and poster to Almighty Thor. Everything I set out to do I have done in 19 months living here in Los Angeles. How unbelievable is that? I am moved by it. April 21st, Almighty Thor will air on the SyFy channel as a SyFy Original and it will be released to Redbox and Blockbuster on April 26. I came out here to star in a movie. I remember moving to Vegas from Kansas and having the dream of being on television just one time. I did that the first month I was out there. It was for about .02 seconds! LOL! The point is, there was a lot I didn’t believe could happen. And each year, as things progress, and as I evolve, I realize that the only thing limiting me is the self-imposed limitations. I am my chain shackling my foot and I am also my wings. I have just decided to let go of the shackles of reality, the shackles of the world, and embrace this weird thing that I use called my Imagination. I saw the hometown newspaper articles, I saw the television interviews, I saw the magazine articles, I saw the credits, I saw the DVD cover… And as far-fetched as any of this was to me three years ago before moving out of Los Angeles it all somehow came true.
Somewhere deep in you I know you have untapped dreams. And, in fact, this year, I may make another dream come true. In fact, the more I think about it, the more I want to. But I have fears about it just as much as I had fears about moving to L.A. If anyone who has seen my journey from the beginning thought that I wasn’t afraid, that is the exact opposite. There have been many moments I have been petrified in reaching my goals, many moments where I talk myself out of doing something. But somewhere through all that fear, my agent shared this with me: She said that you are courageous… because no matter how fearful you were, you still took a step forward, and then another. And I have been beat up time and time again, but I stand on this mountain top, looking down at all that I have accomplished, and I pat myself on the back. I let tears stream down my eyes in that moment because I was there every step of the way. And as this film comes out, I will set up new ideas in my heart of what it is I want to accomplish next in my acting career, and I will see it come to pass. The only thing that will stop me is death, and that would be a sad day; to see such a fighter gone so soon. I guess we never know our life story, but I know that I will continue taking each day pursuing my dreams and working nonstop (but having FUN) to get to where I want to be. They say the best performances are not based on money, but based on the joy of performing. I know the money will come, and I know that I will always create beautiful moments on screen for an audience like yourself: To move you, to inspire you, to motivate you, to make you question yourself, to make you question life, to make you fearful and afraid, and to move you into your own light… I have been moved through films in many ways, and I look forward to people watching Almighty Thor and be moved in some way. And if that happens, when that day happens, then, in that moment, I will have officially done everything I set out to do when I originally moved the City of Angels.
