The Real Hollywood Story

The Real Hollywood Story

When I Blue lithium was 21, in November of 2007, I moved from the borders of Kansas and landed in Las Vegas. For 18 months I felt out life, the city, and the industry of acting in as much of a fashion as one could in Vegas. I have continued growing in steps… form the small town boy in Kansas reaching an impossibility of being the valedictorian of his high school… and the small town boy who dreamt of an impossibility to play college sports (one would have been enough, but I played two)… to the boy fresh from Kansas who felt it was impossible to star in a movie… to a current 25-year-old who feels it’s impossible to win an Academy Award…
I have grown in steps. As I look back on my accomplishments, I have realized that the smallest glimpse of light is all that is needed to make a dream come true. I had the smallest amount hope when I originally wanted to become valedictorian of my high school. But, as the months turned into years, that confidence, and that idea grew in my heart, mind, and imagination, and finally it was presented to me in a real moment of my life.
The same holds true of starring in a movie. When I first moved to Vegas, I felt was an impossible goal to be on TV one time! That means for two seconds even! But as I stirred in my heart and imagination what was impossible or possible, I continued evolving and life presented itself with a moment of starring in my own movie; the Syfy Original movie, Almighty Thor.<P>
The same holds true of being the youngest Academy Award-winner for Best Actor. Two years ago, it wasn’t feasible. Today, my heart and imagination are closer to that concept. Does that mean I fully believe in my dream. No, it doesn’t. It means that I still feel a life-time away from such a possibility. I feel weak and afraid, and mostly inadequate.
But like my pursuits have shown, as long as the dream is alive in my heart, no matter how small, that small amount of light has always been enough, and the catalyst to drive me forward in my darkest hour. That time is certainly here… my darkest hour… and I will not become victim to it… And I will sacrifice and give it everything I got. Closing in on three years in February, my 26th birthday, until time runs out (Adrien Brody won the Oscar at 29 for The Pianist) my push has to be as strong as it was this past year.
Just to recap, this past year I got my agent on August 3, 2010, just one year ago. In that time frame, I starred in Almighty Thor; went immediately from superhero, Thor, to super-villan Mark HardOn in the Action-Comedy, Avery & Pete: Superseeds premiering in November; stepped into a recurring role on Cinemax’s new half-comedy series, A Girl’s Guide to Depravity, premeiring in September; and am playing the southern-charmer, hitch-hiker in the werewolf Horror thriller, Hallow Pointe, Executive Produced by the Executive Producer of Predator. And as much as I have landed, there has been many more roles I have struck out on, missing the titles role in Marvel’s Thor, Starz’s Spartacus: Blood & Sand, and the new Conan film coming out in a couple of weeks. There have been a few other big feature films that I have missed out on for supporting roles and a slew of Guest Star roles in television I have not landed.
Not bad for your first year auditioning in Los Angeles… What can happen next year, and then the next? Although I have three years, it will take a year to have my films made, as it takes a film that long to comlete, with post-production (editing, sound, etc). So, really, I have two years.
This success in a single year stands impressive to most who are far-removed from the business, but even more impressive for those who are in the business, simply because these opportunties I have garnered are… rare. In comparison, there are those who have done it before… yet not usually with absoltuely zero entertainment contacts, a self-funded career, and a small town kid from a town of 1,152 people doing it.
The point is, I have always wanted to give a real-life perspective of what it’s like to pursue a Hollywood career from A-Z every step of the way, and something that would highlight the ups as well as the downs. And that is what I originally did with my blog site at http://HollywoodandBeyond.com. But I have taken that concept to a whole new level, and have decided to introduce a visual counterpart.
In my pursuit of my Hollywood dream, I have seen myself go from homelessness to starring in my own film and back to homelessness.
August 1, 2011 I took to the back seat of my car, once again, to have the flexibility of both time and dollars, to pursue my acting career full force. The first time, which was this exact same time last year (when I decided to quit my full-time job and pursue this career head-on, living out of my car for 7 weeks), I didn’t have the strength to share that experience with others. I blogged about the experience several months later, but didn’t even tell friends of my homelessness.
This time, however, not only am I sharing that with the world, but I am taking you along for the journey. That journey is unpredictable, or so it is said. We can’t predict life now can we? But I feel different. Even as a sit here in Starbucks because I have no home to go to, I still have the greatest level of belief that all my dreams will come to pass.
The intention of this blog is to introduce you to my own reality show web series titled, The Real Hollywood Story. Every single week, those who want to be a part of this journey will experience a new 30-minute episode of me, my life, and my career. In this first episode, you will see the strength of Cody, and you will see my heart shattered. But, in the end, I hope you see the strength to carry on.
How cool would it be to actually see every step of someone preparing for their audition for the title role for a $100-$150 million budgeted film like Thor or Conan? Or what about a hit TV series where I learned a Mid-Atlantic/British-accent in one week for my audition for Spartacus in Spartacus: Blood & Sand, or going behind the scenes of moments on set of Almighty Thor, from my own sefl-perspective of what it’s like starring in your first film?
These moments have already been here, but they weren’t captured or brought to life. And there are many more moments coming… And that is what I want to give you. I want to give the ride of a life time. This is when I am at my biggest low – living out of my car – would it take me to star in another film to generate enthusiastic buzz and support for this project? Why not watch the journey before someone’s made it! Finding out who they were befor they became CODY DEAL to the world. And that is what I am giving to you, or anyone else who wants to be part of that ride. There is no guarnatees they say… but my truths are different. My single-belief in acknowledging that just maybe it is possible is the single-riveting thought that has made all the difference.
To have access to the webseries, you may visit the website: http://TheRealHollywoodStory.com.
The site is what is called a premium site. And if I wasn’t homeless, I don’t think I would charge for this… but I am.
The point is I wish I had the freedom to pursue my passion and my career. Pursuing this business really is a full-time job. And it is absolutely what I want to do. I look forward to the day where I don’t have to struggle losing my job at the vitamin shop, or losing my job at the bar because I go off to shoot a film. Then, when I come back, my position is gone. It happened after Almighty Thor and the next time after filming the TV series, A Girl’s Guid to Depravity.
So since I was exposing myself through my blog site, Dr. Kenn Gold and Gary Morgenstein approached me about doing a reality show web series. I was introduced to both of thee guys when I was doing my own P.R. for Almighty Thor. They shared how they both felt my life was a hell of a lot more interesting then the Kardashians or Paris Hilton’s. They also shared that it could be the ticket to not only help get me off the streets, but provide a financial stream by the people, that would inevitably help me to have my dream of pursuing my career full time without the stress of having enough money.
And this is where I am truly asking for your help. The site is $9.99/mo. to have access to a 30-minute new webisode every single week, to see me pursue this career, see my life of being homeless, and seeing both the highs and the lows. This is something that is 100% completely real.
I encourage YOU to join the site JUST FOR THE FIRST MONTH and see what you are getting. It is $2.50/week – that $2.50 is not only giving you access to the show and my life, but you would be LITERALLY funding my Hollywood career!
I am hoping my home town of Sedan, Kansas will share this in the local paper. I am hoping that people who know me from the college town I went to (El Dorado, Kansas) will help support this. I am hoping the Osage paper (the American Indian Nation I am part of) will help support this. And I am also hoping every person who has ever stumbled across my page, and maybe received just a small glimpse of additional hope, inspiration, or light, that it encourages them or was enough to help me in such a time.
I literally have 7 people who have joined the site. That is $70/mo. I can count on to help me afford acting classes, private auditions, gas, and food. Rent is of no concern to me, and acting classes will be paid for six months in advance before I ever select to use a dime to pay for a roof over my head.
Believe me, the NOW money is important (the donations) and you will truly find out ‘how bad’ it is when you watch the first episode tomorrow. But I would rather have the long-term benefit of having people tune into this every single week, and then share on the message board what they thought of the episode.
There is also many bonuses of joining the site, where you would have access to a non-public (private) daily written journal to hear my headspace and thoughts. You’ll also get the first news of any new projects I book, news about auditions, or anything related you will hear first. You also will have access to the 17-minute test pilot originally filmed that gave the inspiration to do The Real Hollywood Story. You will also see a side of Hollywood that has never been fully exposed before. You will see how many people are faking it to make it, and you will see how I am different.
I am hoping I can generate 150 people this first month to join the site, and keep them. I could comfortably live out of my car with that amount. If you are able to share this message, I would be forever grateful. And if we have ever met in person, or you know who I am, I ask that you take the opportunity to extend a gesture of kindness. I promise (and extremely hope) that by your act of kindness will have a reverse effect and enrich your life by the series you are about to embark on with me.
And, lastly, if you just can’t financially afford to contribute (believe me, I understand), uploaded online will be The Real Hollywood Story: Mini Edition, available for free that will highlight 5-minutes of footage from The Real Hollywood Story: Full-Length Edition, every single week. This is so everyone can have access to my real-life perspective of pursuing a Hollywood career. It is in alignment with why I originally started Hollywood & Beyond.com.
I wanted to throw out a quick shout out to Kenn Gold, Charles Heath, Frederick Schmeisser, Clifton Watkins, Danielle Nowakowski, Annette Ewald, and Jennifer Trice. Thank you for joining The Real Hollywood Story. Sadly, but truly, I have met only 1 of 7 of you in person. Every single other one of you has been inspired by me through Facebook, my blogs, and my movie, and I am so grateful to have you be the first people to be a part of this journey with me; taking the steps with me. You give me a bigger hope that maybe this just may be something that could one day hapen for a small town kid from Kansas.

I have added some additional information that I am posting from  Facebook note to clear up further details:

To eliminate in confusion with me going homeless at the beginning of this month, and to clean-up some false media about my gutless attempt to create viral exposure for me (and how I am living in an apartment and doing this as a publicity stunt) and my career, I wanted to clear up everthing through some Facebook comments I have left others explaning both my reality tv web series (The Real Hollywood Story) and my current living situation.

“Funny thing is, everyone thinks this is a low for me, and I can understand what homelessness can portray and what it represents. That’s why I went onto CNN HLN to speak about homelessness and to give a new perspective that almost anyone can become homeless. I also have felt that the journey I currently fell back in (to have the time and dollars to pursue this career) is a journey not only of my own choosing, but one that always reinvents myself to something bigger. A year ago, in July of last year, I quit my full-time job, went homeless, got my agent in August and officially began my acting career. If that happened, little do I believe that I would have landed Almighty Thor or landed the recurring spot on A Girl’s Guid to Depravity, or landed all the other projects that I have been blessed to have come my direction. So the sacrifice, as hard as it seems to be, was worth it. As you will see in my reality series that there are highs and some lows, it’s not always easy, but for the most part, I am in a grand place, my heart and mind not crumbling because of my current environment. – So this time, who knows what to expect. This 3rd year and 2nd year of my career is something I am bewildered upon. When I wake up every morning, like I did today, I see what is around me, I see my back ache a little bit, but it doesn’t stop me from being thankful for the things I do have (my heart, imagination, and health). I’m very excited to take this second year head on. And the biggest question of them all, what if I did hit? What if my journey could be documented, and the world truly could see the steps that were taken, the moments in an actor’s life who became something great. That is my quest, my adventure, and my dream; to show that there is no crystal-clear direction of a Hollywood career, that the external steps mean very little, simply because every action, every step, is based upon our own inner life and who and how we see ourselves and contemplate what exactly is possible (or impossible) for us.”

“There is so much confusion on what this is [my realtiy show web series, The Real Hollywood Story (http://TheRealHollywoodStory.com)] that it is quite comical. I now know the power of what a movie trailer can do!”

“This news isn’t to ‘break’ any hearts, Mary. I CHOSE to go homeless. Yes, I was given three weeks to vacate my living situation and literally did not have the funds to pay a security deposit and first month’s rent, but I could have gotten a full-time job and may be of made that happen. But, even now I’m not looking for a full-time gig to put my career on the back burner. Also, I am not interested in living with roommates or being in a living situation that I can’t control or don’t like. As much as it seems it is difficult to live out of your car, and although it may be true, I have a system, and Episode 1 highlights that system. I know the trailer is hard to watch, but all the trailer does is telling us that you will see the highs and lows of my Hollywood journey. The concept is no different than my blog site I originally started (http://HollywoodandBeyond.com/) where I have always given a real-life perspective and going beyond the superficial high points of such a career. That concept has just been taken to its next evolutionary step; a visual interpretation of what I’ve already been doing. We just decided to get a video camera in front of me.

There are entertainment sites who say I’m doing it for ratings or a publicity stunt (see Media Bistro’s Article:http://bit.ly/ncVIbx) and others feel it is going to ruin my career and is the worst idea imaginable (see Airlock Alpha:http://bit.ly/pf5uIM). I say to you it’s comletely real real. Although the trailer highlights a difficult moment, it doesn’t mean the series is me down in the doldrums the entire time. Very rarely am I there; very rarely do I crack. But just like my blog, I believe we learn just as much from the lows as we do the highs. And, having a strong male action figure crack, it shows us and the world that it is okay to cry, it is okay to break down, because it in these moments that we re-inspire ourselves to new heights.

So I truly encourage ANYONE to join just to check out the content. Episode 2 will be up this Monday, and following every Monday after that. Many people think this is about me going homeless before I starred in Almighty Thor. No, I went homeless at the beginning of this month. So this isn’t a reality series based upon that. It is based upon a perception that most people think (even many people here) that an actor has made it once he’s starred in a film. It gives a whole new side of Hollywood. It is interesting, unique, and honestly a perspective that even industry people are saying that is so intriguing. Like I say in the series, I don’t believe in the motto, ‘you have to fake it to make it.’ I can’t put on the facade like so many others do. Yeah, it’s fun every once in a while (that’s why I act), but I can’t pretend to be someone I’m not ALL the time. Yet, many actors do. Many feel they have to look like they are living the part (success, fame) even though they are eating themselves alive on the inside. I fully believe that my series, whatever this thing evolves into, will help those who are in the business, too, and give a worldwide view that you don’t have to put on the masks any longer; just be who you are. Don’t let others shatter you or hide you; your’e unique and different and that’s what makes you interesting and intriguing. Embrace it. I feel the more real you are with people, the more those people will root for you.”

I hope this has elminated confusion and the like. If you would like to read more about the creation of the show, you can view my former note/blog by going here: http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=10150342148541340

After all of the mixed-reaction about my series, I’m looking so forward to Episode 2 hitting the site coming Monday. And, also, I am highly considering making Episode 1 public for the world to see.

Best,

Cody

Oh, and P.S. – I had 3 weeks to vacate the former guest house I was living. I didn’t have money in savings nor current dough to afford first month’s rent plus a security deposit. So, truthfully, I didn’t choose homelessness. However, on the flip side, I decided in my mind that I would go homeless instead of getting a 9-5 job and putting my career at the back seat just for a roof over my head. So, I instead, took myself to the back seat, to put my career out front.
